Publications The Henderson County Genealogical and Historical Society publishes a quarterly Journal. The Journals feature Bible and other family records, cemetery surveys, military records, transcriptions of county records, and articles concerning Henderson County history and genealogy. The Society encourages members to submit articles for possible publication. The Society published The Heritage of Henderson County, Volume I in 1985 (reprinted in 2003) and The Heritage of Henderson County, Volume II in 1988. The heavily illustrated heritage volumes contain sketches of Henderson County families, histories of churches and schools, and other articles of historical interest. After five years of intensive groundwork the Society published Henderson County North Carolina Cemeteries in 1995. The cemetery book attempts to survey all known public and private cemeteries in Henderson County. Other Society publications include Index to Henderson County, NC Births 1914-1942 by Patricia Thames with Raleigh Fletcher and Leon Pace, Index to Henderson County, NC Deaths 1914-1956 by Patricia Thames, and Henderson County NC World War I Draft Registrations by Ray Rhoads. Heritage Volumes I and II, Birth Index, Death Index and World War I Draft Registrations are available for purchase. The cemetery book is out of print; however, its contents are available on CD in PDF format. Volunteers with the Society are currently transcribing the Minutes of the Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions of Henderson County 1839 to 1868; we will have them available for purchase in several volumes in the future. Reference Materials Available in our Research Library Henderson County County records include Deeds, 1838-1987; Estate Records, 1899-1964; Adoptions, 1921-1964; Marriages, 1851-1915; Indexed Census Records, 1840-1930; and early newspapers. Court minutes, 1839-1868, are available on microfilm. Published materials include Heritage of Henderson County Volumes I & II, Henderson County North Carolina Cemeteries, Henderson County Deaths 1914-1956, Henderson County Births 1914-1942, Henderson County NC World War I Draft Registrations, and other books on the history of Henderson County. The library also maintains an extensive collection of family histories and genealogical material, Bible records, church histories, maps, photographs and other local history. Other Records (census, cemetery, marriage, land record abstracts, etc.) for surrounding counties in North Carolina and South Carolina. Standard historical and genealogical titles for the Carolinas, Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky and other eastern states. Journals from many societies in the Carolinas and other eastern states. Atwood New England Collection files on many prominent New England families and numerous reference titles for New York and Vermont. |
